An inside guide from a Northern Virginia maternity photographer
If you have been searching for the perfect location for maternity photos in Northern Virginia, chances are you have come across Meadowlark Botanical Gardens and for good reason. Located in Vienna, Virginia, Meadowlark offers 95 acres of gardens, walking paths, water, seasonal blooms and tucked-away spaces that can completely change the feeling of a photograph from one area to the next. At Storyline & Co., we have photographed at Meadowlark many times, and it continues to be one of our favorite locations. Not because every session looks the same, but because they don’t have to.
The secret to photographing Meadowlark is knowing where to look.

One of the biggest advantages of Meadowlark is variety.
Within one session, we can move from soft florals to open greenery, water, winding pathways, textured gardens and architectural elements. Meadowlark includes distinct areas such as the White Garden, Terrace Garden, Bold Garden, Herb Garden and Perennial Garden, along with Lake Caroline and other features throughout the property. For maternity photography, that variety is especially beautiful because we can create a gallery that feels like a story rather than 30 photographs taken against the same backdrop.
And some of our favorite photographs have come from the places you might walk right past.
After photographing here many times, we know the familiar spots—but we’re always looking for something different.
A patch of flowers growing close to the ground. A quiet corner catching the last bit of sunlight. Reflections on the water. A pathway framed just right.

One reason we recommend Meadowlark so often is that there is something different to photograph throughout the year.
NOVA Parks publishes seasonal highlights for every month. Depending on when you visit, the gardens may feature everything from daffodils and tulips in spring to larkspur and other summer plantings, asters and goldenrod in September, mums and beauty-berry in November, and winterberry during the colder months.
That also means your session doesn’t need to look like someone else’s.
A spring maternity session may feel soft and romantic, while summer can give us rich greens and abundant texture. Early fall can still be surprisingly lush and floral, while later fall brings warmer tones and changing foliage.
We plan around what the garden is giving us that season, rather than trying to force every session into the same look.

Light matters just as much as location.
For most of our Meadowlark sessions, we love photographing later in the day when the sunlight becomes softer and warmer. That gives us the opportunity to use backlighting, glowing greenery and softer light on the skin.
But there’s an important catch with Meadowlark: your photography reservation has to work within the garden’s permitted photography hours.
So we don’t simply look up sunset and show up at golden hour. We plan the session around the season, the garden’s operating and photography rules, and the areas we know will photograph beautifully during our reserved time.
This is one of the advantages of working with a photographer who already knows the property.
Your wardrobe can completely change how your photographs feel.
Because Meadowlark often has a substantial amount of green, we usually love colors that create separation from the surroundings rather than disappearing into them.
Some of our favorites include cream and ivory, burgundy, dusty rose, chocolate brown, warm beige and rich jewel tones.
For maternity sessions, flowing fabrics can also work beautifully because they add movement against the structured landscaping.
But we don’t give every client the same color palette.
What we recommend in April may be completely different from what we recommend in September. We consider what’s blooming, the season, your skin tone, your partner’s wardrobe and the overall mood you want for your photographs.
Storyline & Co. clients receive wardrobe guidance before their session so everything works together intentionally.

This is another reason we love it.
Family photographs don’t have to mean asking children to stand still and smile at the camera for an hour.
Meadowlark gives us room to walk, explore and move.
For maternity sessions that include older siblings, that can be especially helpful. We can photograph walking together, exploring the garden, interacting with Mom’s belly and the little moments that happen between the photographs you expected to take.
The garden is large enough that we can also move away from busier areas when needed. While Meadowlark is a public garden and other visitors may be present, having photographed there repeatedly means we already know several alternatives when a popular location is occupied
This part is important: Meadowlark is strict about professional and posed photography reservations.
According to NOVA Parks’ current rules, if the primary purpose of your visit is a portrait session, you’re accompanied by a photographer, you’re wearing formal/costume attire, or you’re planning an outfit change, a photography reservation is required. Portrait photography reservations are currently offered in two-hour increments for $50, and everyone attending including the photographer also pays garden admission.
Reservations are first-come, first-served and can currently be made up to 90 days in advance. Wedding and bridal photography are handled separately and have different requirements and fees.
Because policies and fees can change, we always recommend checking the current Meadowlark Botanical Gardens photography information NOVA PARKS when planning your session..
Knowing a location doesn’t mean repeating the same photographs.
It means knowing where the light falls.
Knowing where we can go when another photographer is using the obvious spot.
Knowing which areas are worth the walk and which aren’t.
At Storyline & Co., we’ve photographed Meadowlark Botanical Gardens many times, but our goal isn’t to recreate our last gallery.
We want to find what makes yours different.

If you’re considering maternity photos at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, we can help you plan more than where to stand.
Storyline & Co. maternity sessions are intentionally planned around you—from wardrobe and color guidance to timing, location scouting and the overall feeling you want your photographs to have.
Because beautiful maternity photography isn’t simply about documenting what you looked like.
It’s about preserving what this season of your life felt like.
